Hermit crabs do not sip or lap. They collect water using fine hairs on their mouthparts and carry it straight to the mouth, a few small mouthfuls at a time. Filling the shell is a completely different operation, and researchers only worked out how it happens by using see-through shells and dye. How Hermit Crabs…
With proper care, pet hermit crabs live 15 to 25 years, and some pass 40. These are decades-long companions, not short-term pets. Most never get close. The gap between a crab that lives two years and one that lives forty comes down to a handful of tank conditions, and one crab proved exactly how far…
Hermit crabs need shells because their back half never hardens. Unlike true crabs, the abdomen stays soft, curved and completely unprotected, so they move into abandoned snail shells and carry them for life. That dependence runs deeper than protection. A hermit crab pulled out of its shell is not just exposed, it is suffocating, and…
You just spotted something in the tank that looks like a pale, lifeless crab lying beside a shell. Your first thought is that your crab died. Nine times out of ten it did not. What you are looking at has a simple explanation, and there is a ten second test that proves it. Hermit Crab…
If your hermit crab has buried itself and stopped moving, it is almost certainly molting. That is the natural process of shedding an old exoskeleton and growing into a larger one, and it means the crab is healthy and growing. It also means the crab is completely defenceless underground. In the wild, roughly 90 percent…
A hermit crab about to molt eats and drinks heavily, digs constantly, slows down, and grows a gray sac on its abdomen before disappearing underground. The signs build over days or weeks, and most owners miss the early ones. There is also one test that separates a molting crab from a dead one, and it…
Yes, but not one central brain like ours. A hermit crab has a small brain in its head plus a chain of nerve clusters called ganglia running through its body, each controlling the parts nearby. One region of that brain turned out to be far more advanced than anyone expected for a crustacean. Researchers found…
No, hermit crabs are not true crabs. They sit on a separate branch of the family tree that scientists nickname the false crabs, alongside squat lobsters and porcelain crabs. The stranger part is what came out of that branch. Genetic work suggests the king crab on a restaurant menu descends from hermit crab ancestors. What…
Hermit crabs live along warm coastlines and oceans worldwide, but the split is nothing like most people assume. Of the 800 plus species, almost every one lives fully underwater. Only about 15 species live on land, and those are the ones sold as pets. One species broke the pattern entirely and lives somewhere no other…
They are not rivals. A coconut crab is a hermit crab, just an enormous one that stopped carrying a borrowed shell. That single decision, giving up the shell, is what let one of them reach 9 pounds while the other stays the size of a baseball for life. Coconut Crabs Are Hermit Crabs? The coconut…
Yes, but only the basic kind. Hermit crabs feel stress, fear, pain, and comfort, and they clearly react to how they are treated. What they do not have is love, jealousy, or grief the way people experience them. The evidence for this is stronger than most owners realise. One set of experiments on hermit crabs…
Losing a hermit crab happens to almost everyone who keeps them, and it is very often not your fault. Most deaths trace back to stress the crab arrived with, air that was too dry, or a molt that went wrong. Before you go any further, there is one thing worth checking. A molting crab and…
